Tech Leaders Battle Negative AI Perceptions and Public Backlash to Data Centers

I get a lot of questions about data centers and AI’s impact on the environment.

These are nuanced topics with very valid concerns.

Data centers, in particular, have become a hot-button issue across the industry, in politics, and in local communities where they are being built.

A recent episode of The Ezra Klein podcast featuring Jasmine Sun offers one of the most objective and informative conversations I’ve heard on the topic.

The question the episode presents is, “how much is the data center backlash about the actual construction of these buildings, and how much is it about A.I. itself?”

We’re going to discuss it on episode 232 of The Artificial Intelligence Show next week, but if this is an area that’s of interest to you, I would highly recommend listening to the full Ezra Klein episode.

“I think that a lot of the public backlash to AI that has risen over the past six months is not explained by people thinking that the technology has no use at all.

“It's not explained by them being worried about specific technical properties of LLMs that might lead to rogue AI or misalignment or whatever, which are the safest arguments.

“It's AI as an avatar for a small group of Silicon Valley billionaires' ability to impose their vision of the world onto everybody else without their consent. I think that's also what I hear echoed in these data center debates.

“It's not just it's going to use this much water or that much water. I frankly think that even if there was no misinformation about water use, people would be just as angry about the data centers.

“Which is to say that I think sometimes people don't like a thing, and they're looking for reasons to justify that dislike.”

Here’s a preview of the stories we’re tracking for Tuesday’s episode:

        • Anthropic begins watermarking Claude-generated content. In accordance with the EU AI Act Code of Practice on Transparency of AI-Generated Content, Anthropic has begun voluntarily marking Claude content. According to Anthropic, “To support transparency and comply with our legal obligations, Anthropic is working to include machine-readable marks in content that Claude generates. Claude models launched on or after August 2, 2026 support marking at launch. We’re also working to add marking support to Claude models released before that date, and we’ll update this article as that becomes available.”

        • Dario Amodei’s wife becomes a central figure in Anthropic’s story. In dueling exposés on Cami Clark, The Information and The Wall Street Journal cast her as a shadowy figure who exerts influence on Amodei and Anthropic, despite not holding an official title with the company. “Clark may well be the most consequential person within Anthropic’s orbit who doesn’t have a formal role at the startup. You might even call her the first lady of Anthropic.”

        • SpaceXAI releases Grok 4.6. Elon Musk’s AI lab released its latest model. According to SpaceXAI, “Grok 4.6 achieves frontier intelligence across several agentic coding and knowledge work benchmarks. It matches GPT-5.6 Sol on the Artificial Analysis Intelligence Index, which is a composite score of nine benchmarks.”

        • Former Google executive rumored to be raising $1B round. Jeff Dean, the longtime Google AI leader who just left the company, is reportedly in talks to raise $1 billion at a roughly $10 billion valuation for his new startup Discovery Loop, which aims to use AI to automate parts of the scientific process, according to Business Insider.
