AI Can Augment Writing Without Replacing Critical Thinking

AI watermarking has been a hot topic lately with Anthropic’s announcement that the company will begin marking content generated by Claude, its AI assistant.

This will help in identifying the low-quality “AI slop” flooding the Internet, but I’d argue that’s not the biggest challenge we face in education and business related to AI content.

As we discussed on Episode 232 of The Artificial Intelligence Show, the bigger issue is “AI plagiarism,” in which individuals present an AI system’s ideas and words as their own with no critical thought.

AI is increasingly going to be a part of how people write, and it should be, especially for people who aren’t writers by trade but have something to say.

It will be used to help draft copy, edit work, and inspire creativity.

We need to accept that writing has evolved, and not judge people because they choose to use the tools.

AI is democratizing creativity, and I believe we should encourage people to participate, not use watermarks to belittle them and their work.

That being said, some people—maybe many people—will use AI as a replacement for having to write and think for themselves.

That is a slippery slope for society.

We have to teach responsible use of AI in schools and business. We have to make clear why sometimes doing the hard work for yourself matters.

Not using AI at all isn’t the answer (especially in schools that often still treat it as cheating), but we need to be able to teach and test for critical thinking and writing skills.

AI has the potential to make us better writers, deeper thinkers, and more inspired creatives, but only if we use it to augment our abilities rather than replace them.

Here’s a preview of the stories we’re tracking for Tuesday’s episode:

              • Anthropic’s annualized revenue tops $65 billion ahead of IPO. According to Bloomberg, Anthropic’s annual revenue run rate hit $65 billion at the end of July. Meanwhile, The New York Times reports Anthropic may seek to raise more than $100 billion in its initial public offering, which could value the company at $2 trillion.

              • OpenAI pauses some frontier model training due to security and alignment concerns. In an unusual move that signals how powerful frontier models are becoming, OpenAI announced that it is pacing model training. On X, Sam Altman said, “We have paused some frontier RL training to ensure that we can meet the appropriate alignment, security and monitoring standards for the new level of capabilities in front of us. Model progress is now extremely rapid, and we always said we would take action if we felt that model capabilities were outstripping the pace of safety and alignment.”

              • Pew Research shows increasing concern over AI from young adults. According to Pew Research Center, “For the first time, a majority of adults under 30 (55%) now say they’re more concerned than excited about AI.” In the same survey, 71% of adults said they think AI will lead to fewer jobs in the United States over the next two decades, up from 64% in 2024.

              • Wispr Flow raises $280M in Series B funding. Tanay Kothari, CEO of Wispr Flow, announced on X that the voice-to-text AI startup was valued at $2B in its latest round led by Menlo Ventures. Kothari said, “Voice has gone from something people were questioning to something they rely on, and it happened faster than we expected. That shift is why we've raised a new round of funding. This funding represents a deeper investment in our products, lab, models, and our team.”

              • Higgsfield valued at $5.4 billion in new funding round. According to Financial Times, the AI video generation platform raised $400 million, just eight months after its previous round of $80 million at a $1.3 billion valuation.
