Why Credibility Beats Volume in the AI Era

Written by Cathy McPhillips | Sep 8, 2026, 1:30:00 PM

Marketers have long sought visibility as a way to elevate their brand. But choosing heightened visibility at the sacrifice of credibility is a wrong choice, Wil Reynolds says.

Reynolds is the Founder and CEO of Seer Interactive, the digital marketing agency he started in 2002 and has grown into a 200+ person team. He has become a trusted voice in the industry on SEO, AI search, and where marketing goes next.

At MAICON 2026, Reynolds will take the stage with a session called "Seen. Believed. Chosen: AI Optimization That Builds Visibility and Credibility," a candid look at what happens when marketing teams chase output at the expense of authority, and what to do instead.

Faster is Not Always Better

The premise of Reynolds's session is a choice he sees every marketing team making, whether they realize it or not.

Every tool on the market is promising the same thing: more content, faster, with fewer people. That approach can work, Reynolds argues, but it has also gone off the rails. More output does not automatically mean more trust. More visibility does not automatically mean more pipeline. And more AI-generated content does not automatically make a brand more useful, authoritative, or chosen.

Reynolds says the winners of the next cycle are already visible in how tools such as ChatGPT and Gemini decide who to cite.

"ChatGPT and Gemini are now using brands it already sees associated with a topic, then running searches to retrieve information based on those brands and brand signals," he says.

Brands that have tried to take shortcuts and drive visibility before establishing credibility are going to face a tough road now, he says.

“Winning in AI is going to be harder than ever for them," he says.

What He Uses AI For and What He Doesn’t

Reynolds is unusually specific about where he draws the line on AI in his own workflow, and will talk candidly about that in his session.

"I use AI to think, challenge, connect dots between ideas and articles I've read," he says. "It does not auto-produce anything for me personally. No emails, no video edits are my two biggies."

Reynolds has a distinct voice, and he isn't willing to spend the time forcing a model to mimic it just to save a few minutes. It's a small example of a much bigger principle he'll walk through on stage: the difference between using AI to raise the quality of your thinking and using it to flood a channel with content that erodes the trust you spent years building.

The KPI Problem

Reynolds has been public about a divergence at his company that many marketers are seeing themselves: a massive drop in organic traffic while pipeline actually went up. He says that experience reshaped how he thinks about measurement in the AI era.

"Metrics is the biggest issue of all these days when it comes to AI visibility," he says. "Everyone wants to be more visible AND tie the results down to a specific ROI, or else. It's early innings and these things are not even close to being settled."

His warning to marketing leaders?

"Scared marketers will stick to outdated KPIs instead of having the tough conversations we need to have,” he says. “Things are harder to track than ever."

For Reynolds, the divergence between traffic and pipeline was a gift. It gave him a year's head start on the hard conversations he knew he'd need to have with clients.

What Wil Reynolds Will Explore at MAICON

In his session, "Seen. Believed. Chosen," Reynolds will:

  • Walk through the real numbers, decisions, and tradeoffs behind his AI Optimization strategy across both sales and marketing
  • Show attendees what happens when teams over-index on being seen and under-invest in being believed
  • What he uses AI for, what he refuses to use it for, and how he decides the difference

He'll also share how to evaluate any AI Optimization strategy through the lens of visibility, credibility, and buyer trust, and how to scale what actually works without eroding the authority your brand depends on.

What You'll Gain from Reynolds' Session

Attendees will leave with a practical framework for making one of the most important calls in marketing right now: what to scale, what to slow down, and what to refuse. Rather than optimizing for more output, more channels, and more noise, you'll learn how to build a strategy where visibility and credibility compound instead of cannibalizing each other.

For marketing leaders under pressure to produce more with AI, this session offers a clear-eyed accounting of the tradeoffs, from someone who has already lived them.
