Pope Leo XIV issued a dire warning to the world about artificial intelligence:  He said humanity risks becoming “passive consumers” of technology rather than active co-workers in creation.

The Pontiff argued in a major address delivered Friday, Dec. 5, that the current path of AI development poses serious risks to critical thinking, child development, and the balance of power in society. He implored everyone to protect what makes us human, including our ability to reflect, choose freely, and love, and avoid leaning heavily on AI.

To explore the Pope’s remarks and their potential impact, I discussed the news with SmarterX and Marketing AI Institute founder and CEO Paul Roetzer on Episode 184 of The Artificial Intelligence Show.

Preserve Human Dignity

The Pope didn’t mince words about the dangers of unchecked AI consumption.

"The ability to access vast amounts of data and information should not be confused with the ability to derive meaning and value from it,'' the Pope said.

He also said: “Our dignity lies in our ability to reflect, choose freely, love unconditionally, and enter into authentic relationships with others.”

He fears AI threatens this.

The Pope specifically highlighted the risks to children, urging society to protect the “freedom and inner life” of young people from being stunted by powerful digital tools that quick provide answers without deep, emotional thought.

He also warned against the economic consequences, noting that AI must not be used merely to “accumulate wealth and power in the hands of a few.”

Silicon Valley Pushback

The Pope’s comments come in the midst of an already heated debate and contrast sharply with the AI acceleration ideals of Silicon Valley investors and entrepreneurs.

Just last month, the tension between these two camps spilled into the open when venture capitalist Marc Andreessen publicly mocked the Pope on X.

After the Pontiff tweeted that AI carries “ethical and spiritual weight,” Andreessen, a vocal proponent of effective accelerationism (e/acc), responded with a meme that many viewed as dismissive of the Pope’s moral concerns.

Andreessen eventually deleted the post, but the incident highlighted a fundamental friction:

  • The Pro-Human View: Represented by figures, including the Pope, emphasizing caution, human dignity, and regulation.
  • The Accelerationist View: Represented by investors such as Andreessen, who view slowing down AI development as a moral failing that costs lives and progress.

Why This Matters to Business Leaders

It is easy for business executives to dismiss comments from religious leaders or public social media spats as irrelevant to their bottom line.

But Roetzer warns that ignoring the cultural and political sides of AI is a mistake.

The Pope’s influence is enormous. There are roughly 1.4 billion Catholics worldwide, and in the United States about 20% of the adult population identifies as Catholic.

When their religious leader frames AI as a matter of spiritual and human survival, it shapes how his followers view the technology.

“There's a whole lot of people in the world who care what the Pope says, and it affects what they think, what they believe, and how they act,” says Roetzer. “And so it's really important that you have that context as you start to think about how society is going to respond to AI moving into 2026.”

This goes beyond religion, he said. It speaks to the fact that AI is no longer just a technology story. It’s a controversial societal issue, similar to climate change and healthcare.

“AI is a political and a religious topic, a very important one,” Roetzer says.
