Saving time is not the goal of AI. Spending it on something better is.
AI tools are multiplying, the pressure to adopt is relentless, and the push to move faster keeps intensifying. But speed without direction, Mitch Joel argues, is not the answer.
Joel is the Executive Director of Next Era Institute and a best-selling author. He spent nearly three decades in digital marketing and continues to advise organizations on how emerging technologies reshape the way brands create value.
At MAICON 2026, Joel will take the main stage to deliver "Marketing Forward," a session built for leaders ready to rethink the old rules of marketing.
From the Attention Economy to the Intimacy Economy
The central premise of Joel's session is a shift he sees already underway.
"We're moving out of The Attention Economy, defined by reach, noise, and volume, into The Intimacy Economy, shaped by relevance, connection, and meaning," he says.
The old playbook, he contends, was built for one-to-many communication. AI is making something fundamentally different possible: what Joel calls a "one-to-X world," where a brand can communicate at scale while making each interaction feel contextual, relevant, and individual.
"The opportunity is not infinite content," Joel says. "It is infinite context."
The most common mistake Joel sees marketing leaders make is treating AI primarily as a tool for automation and productivity: producing more content faster, across more channels, at lower cost. The result, he argues, is an Attention Economy playbook creating more messages, more volume, more noise.
"The more strategic question is: What can we now understand, create, or deliver for the customer that was not previously possible?" Joel says.
A Framework for What's Next
To help leaders navigate that question, Joel introduces what he calls the "Tale of Three Cities" — The Intelligent City, The Intimate City, and The Integrated City — each representing a distinct dimension of how AI is reshaping marketing.
Anchoring all three is his P.A.C.E. framework, which he'll unpack live at MAICON. The framework is designed to give marketing leaders a durable way to make decisions as tools, models, and platforms continue to evolve.
"Marketers need this now because the technology will keep changing," Joel says. "This framework helps leaders make better choices regardless of which tool or technology happens to be dominating the conversation that week."
What Joel Will Explore at MAICON
In his session, "Marketing Forward," Joel will address how marketing is shifting from the Attention Economy to the Intimacy Economy, why the one-to-many model can no longer keep pace with consumer expectations, how AI enables one-to-X experiences built on context rather than volume, and how to use his P.A.C.E. framework to navigate constant technological change with clarity and direction.
When speed is not a strategy, direction is. This session shows leaders how to find it.
What You'll Gain from Joel's Session
Attendees will leave with a new framework for rethinking modern marketing, one built for a world where AI enables brands to be both legible to machines and genuinely resonant with humans. Rather than optimizing for more content, more channels, and more noise, you'll learn how to build toward intimacy at scale.
For marketing leaders navigating the pressure to adopt AI faster, this session offers a clear-eyed view of where marketing is actually headed and a concrete model for getting there.
